Pool Installation Checklist: Everything Australian Homeowners Need to Know

A backyard pool is a major investment. Pool installations involve mandatory approvals, strict safety fencing laws, and a complex construction process.

Types of Pools in Australia

  • 1 Concrete (gunite/shotcrete): customisable, 3–6 month build
  • 2 Fibreglass: installed in 1–2 weeks, limited shapes
  • 3 Above-ground: cheapest option, no council approval in most states
  • 4 Plunge pool: compact, perfect for small backyards

Council Approval is Mandatory

In every Australian state, you must obtain council approval before installing any in-ground pool.

Pool Fencing: The Law

All pools must have compliant fencing under AS 1926.1: minimum 1.2m fence height, self-closing and self-latching gate.

⚠️ Watch out: Your pool cannot be used until fencing is inspected and certified.

After Your Pool Is Complete

  • 1 Register your pool with your local council
  • 2 Test water chemistry weekly for the first month
  • 3 Service the filter and pump annually
