How to Read a Tradie Quote

Getting multiple quotes is great — but only if you can compare them properly.

The Anatomy of a Good Quote

A detailed professional quote should include: description of work, materials supplied, exclusions, price with and without GST, payment terms, and an estimated timeline.

PC Items and Provisional Sums

  • 1 PC (Prime Cost) items: allowances for owner-selected items
  • 2 Provisional sums: estimates for work that can't be accurately priced yet
  • 3 Ask for the fixed-price vs allowances breakdown

Red Flags in Quotes

  • 1 Vague scope
  • 2 Very low PC/PS items
  • 3 No mention of waste disposal
  • 4 No payment schedule
  • 5 Verbal quote only
  • 6 Heavy upfront deposit

Pro tip: The middle quote is often the best value.
