How to Handle Tradie Disputes

Even with good tradies, disputes happen. Understanding your rights and the steps to resolve disputes keeps you protected.

Step 1: Raise It Directly

Contact the tradie in writing describing the specific problem. Give them a reasonable opportunity to rectify before escalating.

Step 2: Document Everything

  • 1 Photograph all defects with timestamps
  • 2 Keep all quotes, contracts, invoices, and receipts
  • 3 Get a second tradie's opinion on rectification cost

Step 3: Fair Trading

Lodge a complaint with the consumer protection authority: NSW Fair Trading, Consumer Affairs Victoria, QBCC.

Step 4: Tribunal

  • 1 NSW: NCAT
  • 2 VIC: VCAT
  • 3 QLD: QCAT
  • 4 SA: SACAT
  • 5 WA: SAT

⚠️ Watch out: Never make final payment before inspecting the work thoroughly.
