The Most Common Entry Points
Most pests enter through surprisingly small gaps: door gaps (3mm is enough for cockroaches and spiders), window screen holes or gaps in frames, gaps around pipe penetrations, gaps at the base of bricks or cladding, roof cavity entry via broken eaves, and sub-floor vents without proper mesh.
Priority Sealing Works
- 1 Door sweeps on all external doors: brush-type sweeps seal the gap under the door effectively
- 2 Weatherstripping on door frames and window frames: replaces compressed or cracked seals
- 3 Silicone sealant around all pipe penetrations where they pass through external walls
- 4 Expandable foam or silicone around gaps in eaves, fascia, and brickwork
- 5 Mesh over sub-floor vents (stainless steel mesh — rodent-proof)
Flyscreens
Flyscreen quality varies enormously. Standard aluminium flyscreen is easily damaged. Security screens (Crimsafe, SecureView, Diamond Grill) provide pest exclusion and added security. For a tropical Queensland home, security screens throughout with no gaps is the single most impactful pest-exclusion investment.
Mosquito Management in Australia
Mosquito-borne illness (dengue fever in tropical QLD, Ross River virus across most of Australia, Murray Valley encephalitis) makes mosquito management a genuine health priority. Key actions: eliminate all standing water sources (gutters, pot plant saucers, blocked drains), use barrier sprays on vegetation around living areas, install aircon to allow windows to stay closed at dawn and dusk peak biting times.
Rodents
Rats and mice follow predictable pathways and enter through remarkably small openings: mice can squeeze through a 6mm gap. Check and seal gaps at the base of garage doors, around the dryer vent exterior, and at the roofline where eaves meet brick or tile. Snap traps (Victor brand is highly rated) outperform bait for rapid knockdown — place in wall cavities, under sinks, and behind fridges.
Pro tip: Rodent bait (second-generation anticoagulants) is effective but risks secondary poisoning of owls, raptors, and pet cats/dogs that eat poisoned rodents. Use snap traps in areas accessible to non-target animals.
