Flooring Installation Checklist: Choosing and Installing New Floors in Australia

New flooring transforms how a home looks and feels. But a poor subfloor, the wrong product, or a rushed install leads to creaks, gaps, and expensive replacement.

Flooring Types Compared

  • 1 Solid timber: sensitive to moisture
  • 2 Engineered timber: more stable, suitable over slab
  • 3 Hybrid SPC: 100% waterproof, extremely stable
  • 4 Laminate: affordable, not waterproof
  • 5 Tiles: most durable and waterproof
  • 6 Carpet: warm and quiet

Step 1: Subfloor Assessment

The subfloor must be flat (within 3mm over 1.8m), dry, and structurally sound.

⚠️ Watch out: Always do a moisture test on concrete slabs before installing timber or laminate.

Step 2: Installation

  • 1 Remove existing floor covering
  • 2 Grind high spots or self-level low spots
  • 3 Install flooring per manufacturer's method — maintain expansion gaps
  • 4 Install scotia or beading to cover the expansion gap at walls
