Deck & Pergola Checklist: Planning, Approval & Building Guide

A deck or pergola transforms your outdoor living space — but they require careful planning, the right materials, and often council approval.

Do You Need Council Approval?

Most Australian councils require approval for decks over 1m above natural ground level, or decks larger than 10m².

Choosing Your Timber

  • 1 Hardwood (spotted gum, merbau, blackbutt): durable, premium
  • 2 Treated pine: budget-friendly
  • 3 Composite (Trex, Millboard): low maintenance
  • 4 Aluminium: virtually maintenance-free, great for coastal areas

Pergola Roofing Options

  • 1 Open (battens only): shade without blocking light
  • 2 Polycarbonate sheeting: weather protection
  • 3 Insulated panel roof: maximum weather protection
  • 4 Louvre roof system: flexible, high-end

Maintenance

  • 1 Apply penetrating oil to all hardwood immediately after install
  • 2 Re-oil hardwood annually
  • 3 Composite needs only a wash
  • 4 Inspect fixings annually for corrosion

Pro tip: Use LED strip lighting under the deck frame for atmospheric night lighting.
