Concrete for Home Projects: Types, Finishes, and What to Specify

Concrete is Australia's most versatile and durable building material. From driveways to floors to feature walls — choosing the right type, finish, and specification ensures a result that looks great and lasts for decades.

Concrete Mix Strength

Concrete strength is measured in MPa (megapascals). Common specifications: 20MPa for footpaths and garden areas, 25MPa for residential driveways and footings, 32MPa for structural elements and heavily loaded slabs. Your concretor will specify this on the delivery docket — you can check it.

Pro tip: For a residential driveway, specify 25-32MPa with 10mm aggregate and a 'fibre-reinforced' mix — the fibres reduce cracking significantly without additional steel mesh.

Concrete Finishes

  • 1 Broom finish: standard, anti-slip, economical — the workhorse of Australian driveways and paths
  • 2 Exposed aggregate: textured surface revealing the aggregate — attractive, very durable, non-slip
  • 3 Coloured concrete: oxide pigments added to the mix — consistent colour throughout (not just surface)
  • 4 Pattern stamped: impressed with patterns to resemble pavers, slate, or brick — high-end look, higher cost
  • 5 Polished concrete (interior): ground smooth and sealed — popular for modern homes, very low maintenance

Reinforcement

Residential concrete slabs typically use: SL82 mesh (steel reinforcement mesh) at mid-depth of slab, or polypropylene fibres added to the mix. Steel reinforcement (reo) bars are used for beams, columns, and heavily loaded slabs. Never pour concrete without proper reinforcement — even for garden paths. Check that your concretor is placing and covering reinforcement correctly before the pour.

Curing Time

Concrete gains strength as it cures (hydrates). Design strength (25MPa) is typically reached after 28 days. However: foot traffic is safe after 24 hours, vehicle traffic after 7 days minimum (28 days preferable for heavy vehicles). Don't allow heavy trucks or skips on new concrete driveways for at least 28 days.
