Air Conditioning Installation Checklist for Australian Homes

Australia's climate makes air conditioning essential in most regions. Choosing the wrong system or size — or using an unlicensed installer — can cost thousands.

Choosing the Right System

  • 1 Split system: single room or open plan
  • 2 Multi-split: one outdoor unit serving multiple indoor heads
  • 3 Ducted: whole-home solution via ceiling ducts
  • 4 Evaporative: only effective in hot dry climates

ARCTick Licence is Mandatory

Any work involving refrigerant must be done by a technician holding an ARCTick licence.

⚠️ Watch out: Never hire someone without an ARCTick licence to install a split system.

Running Costs and Star Ratings

A 5-star system uses roughly half the energy of a 2-star system. Running a 7kW split system costs approximately $0.30–$0.60 per hour.

Maintenance

  • 1 Clean filters every 3 months
  • 2 Annual service by a qualified technician
  • 3 Keep outdoor unit free of debris
  • 4 In coastal areas, hose down outdoor unit regularly
